Privacy policy

Adapt provides context-aware definitions only when you deliberately select text and activate a lookup. It does not continuously monitor your browsing and has no advertising or analytics service.

Information sent for a definition

Adapt sends the selected word or phrase, nearby readable text capped at 3,500 characters, the page title, and the website hostname directly to the model provider you configured. It does not send the complete page URL. The provider processes this information under its own terms. This may be OpenAI, Anthropic, or a custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint you explicitly configure. Adapt’s developer does not receive these requests.

Information stored locally

Adapt stores provider and model settings, your API key, activation preferences, and estimated usage in your Chrome profile. If you enable history, it also stores up to 100 recent definitions with their nearby context, page title, source URL, and time. The API key is encrypted at rest using AES-256-GCM with a non-exportable, installation-specific key stored separately in the extension’s IndexedDB database. Local extension storage is restricted to trusted extension contexts, and API keys are never inserted into visited webpages.

Optional feedback

The popup includes an optional feedback form. If you submit it, Adapt sends only your message and any reply email you choose to provide to a Google Form owned by Adapt’s developer. Responses are stored in a linked Google Sheet and used only to review feedback, respond to support requests, and improve Adapt. Nothing is sent unless you press Send feedback.

Collection and sharing

Adapt’s developer does not collect, sell, rent, or use personal data for advertising or unrelated purposes. There is no analytics or remote telemetry. Definition information is shared only with the provider you choose and only to provide a definition you request. Optional feedback is shared only with Google Forms after you deliberately submit it.

Chrome Web Store Limited Use

Adapt Dictionary’s use and transfer of information received from Chrome APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. Adapt uses this information only to provide or improve its single user-facing purpose, does not use it for advertising, and does not permit humans to read it except where required by law, necessary for security, or specifically requested by the user for support.

Your choices

You can turn off history, clear it from the popup, revoke your provider key, or remove Adapt. Removing the extension deletes its local extension data through Chrome. You can request deletion of submitted feedback by contacting the address below and providing enough detail to identify it.

Security

OpenAI and Anthropic requests use HTTPS. A custom provider can be a local HTTP endpoint chosen by you. Protect your Chrome profile, use a restricted API key where available, and configure provider spending limits.

Changes

If a material change affects what is sent for definitions, Adapt will require you to accept an updated disclosure before another provider request.
